Gulf County, Florida has everything except for mountains! If you're looking for great freshwater fishing and hunting, we've got that. If you're looking for some of Florida's finest beaches we've got that too.
Dead Lakes
The Dead Lakes is reported to have been formed when sand bars created by the current of the Apalachicola River blocked the Chipola River. The ensuing high water killed thousands of trees in the floodplain, giving the area its name. The Dead Lakes offers fishing, boating, camping and nature study.
Water Eyes
The word Wewahitchka is an old Indian name which translates into "Water Eyes". From above in the heart of Wewahitchka, Lake Alice and Lake Julia look like eyes or "Water Eyes".
Lake Alice
Lake Alice has been turned into a gathering place for locals. The city has built a park amongst the oak trees with a playground for kids, walking track, and pavilion for parties an other events. Lake Alice park is also the location for the almost famous "Tupelo Festival" which is held annually the third Saturday of May. Lake Alice is also a great place for water-skiing and swimming.
The Beaches
We're closer to the beach than you think! Within a short 15 minute drive from Wewahitchka you'll find some of Florida's most pristine beaches including Mexico Beach, St. Joe Beach, and Cape San Blas. As you head down CR386 South from Wewahitchka you'll reach your most important decision as the road dead ends to US Hwy 98. Don't worry, you're already at the beach! To your left you will find St. Joe Beach, Beacon Hill and Cape San Blas, and to your right you'll see Mexico Beach... the choice is yours! In 2002 Cape San Blas was ranked #1 of America's Top Beachs by Dr. Stephen Leatherman (more info).
St. Joe Bay: Kayaking, Fishing
One of the most pristine coastal bays in all of Florida can be found in southern Gulf County. Wrapped on one side by the shores of St. Joseph Peninsula and bordered on the other by the city of Port St. Joe, this aquatic playground has something for almost everyone. Kayaking the bay's protected waters is a favorite pastime.
Surf fishing can be enjoyed almost year-round. One of the favorite fishing spots frequented by many local fishermen is at the new Windmark Beach development, also known for years as "Dixie Belle Curve", named after a local motel in the same area.
